Severn Suzuki is the daughter of environmental activist David Suzuki. At the time of this video, she was 12 years old and had founded a group called ECO (Environmental Children’s Organization). Along with fellow group members, they raised money to travel to and address the Earth Summit in Rio De Janerio in 1992.
This entry is aptly titled, Mr. D, as the video is indeed a powerful message by a courageous and articulate young lady! I had some trouble watching the video, as there were delays throughout, but it was well worth the wait. Ms. Cullis-Suzuki’s message appeals to all of us to take responsibility for our part in creating the future.
It’s hard to imagine that she spoke these words 15 years ago and has continued to spread her message to the world. It’s exciting, though, to me, that the UN is now speaking out about global changes that are affecting our world. I truly believe that every single person who stands up to make a difference in the world does have an effect, even if it takes 15 years, or more.
That made me get teary because that girl is my age and I could not stand up and give a better speach. It makes me sad that it only made a little difference.
thanks

That girl is so brave. I could never stand up in front of the UN. I wonder how she started ECO. I think she speech was as good as an adult. I think that many people didn’t really care about what she was saying so she many people didn’t do what she said was right.
Interesting article, i have bookmarked your site for future referrence 🙂
